23rd November 2009 – The Traffic Light System of School Food Eating

This Week:  The Traffic Light System

This system of eating is encouraged in our schools, so that from an early age, children learn the benefits of a balanced diet. They learn that by following ‘The Traffic Light System’, they have a higher nutrient intake and are eating better ‘brain’ foods.

What is this system? Read on to find our more.

Category 1 – Green Light – Everyday Foods

Foods and drinks in this category are the most suitable for school food services. They should be freely promoted and encouraged and included in their main meals.

For eg, Breads/Rolls – wholemeal, wholegrain, pita, Lebanese, raisin/fruit breads, rice/corn cakes

Fresh fruit and all garden vegetables, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, vegetable sticks, legumes, chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils, baked beans, lentil patties

Category 2 – Amber Light – Select Carefully Foods

These foods and drinks contains some valuable nutrients but may also have some unhealthy ingredients.

For eg, Commercially prepared pasta products, instant noodles and rice, breakfast cereals, refined cereals with added sugar and low fibre

Salads dressed with lots of oil, mayonnaise or dressings

Dairy foods, full fat yoghurt, milk, cheese, low/reduced fat custards

Chicken nuggets, chicken fillet wedges/strips, chicken patties, fish fingers, fish burgers, sausages.

Category 3 – Red Light – Occasional Foods

These are the least suitable for school food services. Schools should limit the availability of these foods.

For eg, Cakes, muffins, sweet pastries, slices, biscuits, croissants, donuts, chocolate cakes/slices, danishes, cream buns, meringues, ice-creams, milk-based ice confections and dairy desserts.

9th November 2009 – Minimise Muscle Aches with Massage & Cupping

This Week:  Massage & Cupping Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a state of wellness that is accompanied with many musculoskeletal changes.

These changes affect joints, ligaments, muscles and even the organs of the body. Often there is associated pain especially in the lower back and legs.

Appropriate massage techniques are required to allow these body changes to continue but minimise the associated discomfort and pain. Pregnancy massage can be performed throughout the pregnancy.

Cupping

Most people know that this ancient practice has been in use in China for thousands of years but it has also been used in Europe for centuries to treat many ailments.

It is commonly used today to treat muscular aches and pains.

Cupping acts on the muscle by pulling on it, similar to deep tissue massage. Cupping will help draw out waste products and toxins in the muscles to the surface ready for the body to eliminate. As a result of this waste movement, cupping can result in light to dark purple circles on the site of application. These generally fade quickly.

Cupping can be used in conjunction with massage or alone in a treatment session.

 19th October 2009 – 7 Tips for Healthy Sleeping

This Week: 7 Tips for Healthy Sleeping

Good sleep is vital – it allows your body a chance to rejuvenate and heal itself, as well as giving you more energy for the day ahead.

We spend about one third of our lives in bed, and this should be spent mostly sleeping, not tossing and turning.

Here are 7 tips for healthy sleeping :

·         Good sleep posture – try sleeping on your back or side but NEVER on your stomach (except for small children).

·         Routine – Try having a set time to go to bed and try to factor in at least 7-8 hours sleep each night.

·         Regulate your breathing – take 7-12 seconds to breathe in and out. This allows your body to relax and lowers your heart rate.

·         TV – try not to watch TV right before going to bed, but instead read a book.

·         Avoid Chemicals – drinks high in caffeine can affect your ability to sleep well.

·         Tune up your spine – the ability to get comfortable for sleep can either aide or hinder your quality of rest. Being subluxation and restriction free helps with this.

·         Sleep assessment – if you are still struggling to have a good night’s sleep, why not book a free 30 minute assessment with your chiropractor.

 5th October 2009 – Spring Detox Ideas

This Week: Spring Detox Ideas

Detoxification refers to reducing the toxic loads in our bodies. Toxic agents are unfortunately plentiful – from air pollution, cigarette smoke, electromagnetic radiation to food chemicals. Why not dedicate October as a month to have a Spring Detox for the body? Here are 5 useful tips :·         As an overall aim, reduce the eating of packaged items, eg, boxed cereals, frozen meals, jarred condiments or processed savoury snacks such as chips – this will automatically reduce your preservative and additive load.·         Try a fruit breakfast for most of the week – at least four days per week – and choose different coloured fruits that will provide different nutrients to help fight disease.·         Eat less and don’t overload the body’s digestion. There is a gap between when your brain thinks you have eaten enough and when your stomach actually has. Try finishing your meal before you feel full since if you wait until you feel full, it will be too late as you will have over eaten.·         If you smoke, commit to stop by Melbourne Cup. Start to reduce your smoking by identifying the cigarettes that, during the day, hold the least value. Start by reducing these. Think of the 4 D’s when you have a craving – Delay, Deep breathe, Drink something or Do something else. If you need help, call Quitline on 131 848.·         To reduce your electromagnetic radiation, try and move alarm clocks at least one metre away from where you sleep, and if modems are nearby, turn them off too, as this can negatively effect your sleep quality.

24th August 2009 – Arthritis – Foods That Can Help!

This Week: Arthritis – Food as medicine

Foods can effect joint health and we especially note the aches and pain our joints feel in winter.

For the next four weeks, reduce the load of sugars, alcohol, meat (especially red meats) and bad fats (trans fatty acids and animal based saturated fatty acids) seen in pastries, cakes and biscuits.

Substitute the red meat with oily fish, add taste to cooked foods using ginger and parsley and add good fats eg, nuts, to your diet.

Note how your joints feel before making any food changes. Then see how they feel a month later.

If successful, look to maintain this dietary choice as your food choice will help or hinder your joint health.

 10th August 2009 – Injuries – Heat or Ice?

This Week: Injuries – Heat or Ice?

There is often uncertainty, when we injure our back, as to what to do.

The body responds to injury with acute inflammation. This is observed as a joint that often is hot, tender, red, painful and has difficulty in moving.

To help overcome this acute inflammation, a cool pack wrapped in a towel, will help numb the area and move the acute inflammation to the next phase of healing. This should be your starting point.

Different time protocols are used from cycles of 10 minutes on/10 minutes off for severe cases to 10 minutes on/leave for an hour for less severe cases.

If unsure, call the clinic as we can advise. Also we use ultrasound and Traumeel (anti-inflammatory cream) to help speed up the recovery.

Sugars are generally high glycemic foods, giving the body a fast release of sugar which can act as a sugar ‘high’.The pancreas in the body secretes insulin that reduces blood glucose levels to a normal level. Over time, the pancreas does not secrete enough insulin so that there is more glucose in the blood leading to less in the cell. The body then suffers from a drop of energy and you can suffer from that sluggish feeling. To tell the levels of sugars, check the food nutritional panel on the food label. There are two main rows to check – the Carbohydrate row, eg 10.2g and –the sugars level, eg 10g. This means that the sugar content of this product is a staggering 98%. Often this is found in confectionary, sweets, boxed cereals, pastries and biscuits.Practical tip : Aim to keep the sugar level in your foods below 10%.For a more comprehensive analysis, you can see Dr Bergamo for a nutritional consultation.

29th June 2009 – Handling Mood Problems – A New Way!

This Week: Handling Mood Problems A New Way for both Children & Adults

The traditional method for handling behavioural and mood problems is to see a psychiatrist or psychologist to help the brain function. This effects the brain axis only.New research coming from the USA looks at the concept of a Gut-Brain Axis. The Gut-Brain Axis is a connection between the Gut and the Brain. Here the Gut function effects upstream Brain function. In Paul’s nutrition experience, he has found with patients that firstly the gut is a problem, by identifying changes in bowel habits (constipation/diarrhoea), and abdominal pain and/or bloating.By then applying some specific gut detoxification protocols, Paul has helped gut function but also improved mood and brain function in his patients. This is a new way of thinking that will come into the Australian Health System more conventionally over the next decade as we find mental health problems continue to escalate.

It has been said that prevention is the best form of medicine. What does this mean with back pain prevention? Here are 3 top tips to help :·          Lift using your thigh muscles...not your back muscles. Thigh muscles are the biggest muscles in the body, and are designed to help carry loads...your deep back muscles are short and are designed to control only small movements.·          Core Strengthening. Specific exercises that build your core strength can keep the low back strong. Eg, lying on your back with your knees bent, draw your umbilical button down to your back and hold for ten seconds.·          Listen to your body. Niggles are warning signs that your back should be checked by your chiropractor.
